Keynote Speech:
Does Asia Need Translanguaging?
Abstract:
Translanguaging has emerged over the last 30 years as a power, disruptive concept in a number of language-related disciplines adjacent to applied linguistics. It has raised questions about the nature of human language, human cognition, and (language) learning and teaching. This talk traces the origin and development of the concept and its applications in different contexts across Asia. It shows that translanguaging is already a sociolinguistic reality in Asia, and invites the participants of the conference to think together about the future of applied linguistics with Asian characteristics from a translanguaging perspective.
